Nelson Mandela Day

employees celebrate nelson mandela day

The international day to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela is 18 July, which would have been his 96th birthday. Mandela, a former president of South Africa, was admired for his heroic adherence to his principles and his extraordinary decision to embrace and forgive his oppressors. He spent more than 67 years involved with supporting his community, country and the world.

Each year since the United Nations declared this international day of service, millions of people around the world have dedicated at least 67 minutes of their time to making a difference. Employees in our South Africa office showed their support for Nelson Mandela Day by building toys and encouraging others to get involved.

Prior to 18 July, PPD employees made 67 toys by hand for orphans at a local shelter. PPD also sponsored food, blankets and books, tying into this year's theme of "Literacy, Shelter and Food for Children."

On the day of the remembrance, team members fenced a sustainable community garden, supplied cake and juice for more than 400 children, varnished wood in the classrooms for 67 minutes and laid 67 bricks to symbolize a pathway to education for the children. The expected impact for such acts exceeds 1,000 lives.

Our employees in South Africa are proud to support their community initiatives and encourage others to take a few moments on 18 July in the years ahead to do something that will make a difference in the lives of others.
